Frequently Asked Questions
about Airbrush Tanning and More

This page is not a substitute for calling me at 978-663-0922 if you are serious about making money in airbrush tanning, makeup, and tattoos. Even if you are just interested in purchasing a system for your own home use, you'll be in the business after your friends see your tan.

I'm skipping the real basic stuff because you've probably read it on the other sites you've visited.

Q. What's in the airbrush tanning solution and what makes it different?
A. It's 8% DHA + 2% erythrulose plus it's the only solution that has a sun protection of SPF 15. Also, no alcohol as with others. Alcohol creates a huge cloud. The tint is a nice brown and is as dark as the actual tan. Too many solutions are way too dark. You end up with a disappointed client after the tint washes off and the real tan revealed is lighter in color.

Q. Why is erythrulose added?
A. DHA is drying and is susceptible to streaking, itchiness, going "orange", and fading away in patches. Both are sugars, but the erythrulose counteracts the four problems mentioned. It makes for a better solution.

Q. How much is the airbrush tanning solution?
A. It's only $35 / quart and $115 / gallon because I'm the "manufacturer" although Madame Renaud Naturals actually mixes it up. Order through me, however.

Q. Is there anything else different about your airbrush tanning solution?
A. It's probably a lot fresher and has a longer shelf life than most other solutions. There are four shelf lives to consider: 1) the inherent shelf life of the DHA powder. Some last six months and some one year. The best lasts 1.5 to 2 years. That's what we have been buying.  2) how long it was sitting on the shelf at the powder manufacturer (our source has a very quick turnover) 3) how long it sits on the shelf at the lab (my lab makes it one or two weeks in advance) and 4) how long it sits on your shelf.

Q. What color choices are there in the airbrush tanning solution?
A. You only need a tinted solution and a clear solution. The tinted solution is primarily there for you to see where you have sprayed. Sure, the client has the appearance of being tanned instantly, but the real tan fully shows 8 hours later. You don't need four different tints for different skin tones.

Q. Why use the clear airbrush tanning solution?
A. For face tanning (one of the three services), it's quick and can be sprayed on someone wearing white. It sets you up for demonstrating the airbrush makeup over it. If you're doing home parties, someone might object to your spraying the tinted solution in their bathroom or spare room. You can see where you've sprayed by the shine. I have a number of clients who only use clear. Their clients don't care about the instantly tanned look.

Q. How profitable is airbrush tanning?
A. A gallon of solution is $115. You get about 70 top to toe tans out of it. If you are charging $30 per tan your profit is $2,000 per month. 70 per month is about 3 clients a day - a reasonable first goal.

Q. You mentioned three airbrush tanning services. What are they, and what should I charge?
A. Top to toe: $25 to $30 (no higher). Upper chest, upper back, arms, neck and face (picture a woman with a towel around her): $10 to $12. Neck and face: $5. Many people won't try something that costs $25 to $30. If they do, and come back two or three times, they may stop until bathing suit season hits. The $10 to $12 service is perfect for most low cut / sleeveless outfits. The $5 brings in traffic, takes 5 seconds, and can be very profitable. Realize that there are two seasons in a year - Bathing Suit Season and Non-Bathing Suit Season.

Q. I have a salon/spa/tanning salon, how do I get this off the ground?
A. My "demo day" postcards brought 65 people into a salon with just 300 mailed and handed out. I give you 200 free. I give you 100 business cards promoting the airbrush tanning and other services. Give them out everywhere with a nice tan on your face. There's much more that I help you with.

Q. If the airbrush tanning is so profitable, why should I do the airbrush makeup, airbrush tattoos, transfer tattoos, or even sell products from www.madamerenaud.com.
A. Airbrush tanning represents only 50% of your potential income. Businesses that add the other services, make a lot more money. The airbrush makeup is very easy to do and there's a $10 service here that no one is doing. The same equipment will do all the services.

Q. I don't have a salon; how can I be successful?
A. 1/4 of my clients are home-based or mobile. You need to do more than just the tanning, especially if you are doing home parties. If you are spraying someone, they can be playing with the Madame Renaud products. Your assistant can be doing transfer tattoos. You'll be demonstrating the airbrush makeup. It has to be fun! You can't have three people sitting there doing nothing.

Q. What about going mobile?
A. Home parties, dancers, Hooters waitresses, working from a college dorm, a table at some high school game, to name a few ideas. The big money at a college or high school is to do airbrush tattoos of the school letters and the school mascot on body, face, and hair. This is in addition to the airbrush tanning and airbrush makeup.

Many people have been successful working a 70/30 split with a spa/salon while working there two days a week. You get to work their mailing list for the "demo days" postcards, and drop invites to their neighboring businesses. The postcard will bring them plenty of prospective clients for their side of the business. They will also get back lost clients.

Q. What systems do you offer?
A. Primarily two systems, each with the same bottom feed, high quality dual action airbrush. I've covered this in detail elsewhere on the site, but both are capable of 25 top to toe clients a day. The Metal Mini will probably make you more money, however, because people can envision it in their home to do airbrush tanning and makeup. You can mark it up for resale.

Q. Won't my selling airbrush tanning and airbrush makeup systems take away from my doing it as a service?
A. You're not going to sell it to someone who wants to see you every week for the entire year. Keep in mind two clients. One who is just visiting someone where you are, and the more common client, one who says that they will just be seeing you during Bathing Suit Season.

You are also going to be selling them additional quarts at $65 or $75, whereas you are buying them for $95 per gallon (four quarts). You can even keep them stocked in makeup.

Q. What do I tell my clients before they come in to be airbrush tanned?
A. They should shave and shower that morning. The last step in the shower should be a loofah or washcloth with baking soda to get the soap film off. They probably have the baking soda in the house. You can sell them a scrub from Madame Renaud Naturals. They will come in wearing light-weight loose fitting clothing, preferably dark in color (the tint does wash out.

Q. Naked?

A. Most clients (mostly women) are happy to be tanned wearing their two-piece bathing suit or bra and panties. You'll figure it out. You can leave the room and they can easily do a fill-in (top, bottom, and rear end) with the airbrush. The after-shower tan extender that you will sell them can also fill in if used three times the next day or two.

Q. I'm undecided about the Metal Mini vs. the Iwata. What should I do?
A. You can try the Metal Mini compressor for two weeks and if you aren't happy with it, send it back in the original box and I'll send you the Iwata for the $95 difference in price.

Q. How much to add the airbrush tattoo kit?
A. $160 or $215. $160 includes four stencil sets each containing 5 to 8 stencils, 10 bottles of alcohol base colors, spray tack, and display cards. The $215 includes water base colors (or the new silicon base colors) for face and hair, and color display cards. You will be doing many hair and face tattoos at high school games and on college campuses. Cutting stencils is not difficult.

Q. Why should I do the airbrush makeup?
A. Because it complements the airbrush tanning. It's easy to do. I can teach any guy to be good at it in an hour. The $10 service is airbrush foundation, blush, and eye shadow with the same blush color. The client does her own lipstick, liner, and mascara.

You can do a wedding party in half the time even if you are skilled enough to do everything. If your skills aren't up to it, many brides would love to pay on $10 to $20 per member of her wedding party for just the foundation, blush, and eye shadow.

The makeup comes in water base and silicon base. Since the silicon base doesn't dry as fast as the water base, it can be used as a concealer first. It also fills in lines better. The water base works great and comes with the system. $60 gets you the silicon base makeup kit.

Q. I have many more questions...
A. Great. I'm tired of typing. Please call me 7 days a week at 978-663-0922. You buy a system from anyone on the Net. Some of them are good, too many are bad. No one else will do what I can to help you make the most money. You will have competitors, but you can drive them crazy if you do the business right. Please read the information on the "higher profits" and "$59 website" pages. These tools have boosted profits for all types of businesses.
